些冬季的“林荫大道”提供了很多到达攀冰地点的通道，但是，要判断冰层的厚度—特别是在河心和湖心—也有很大的难度。通过以下的指导可以使你避免身陷险境．

Navigate the river. Water flows fastest -- and the ice is subsequently thinnest -- on the outside of a curve and in narrow sections. These spots are also where the river is often deepest, so use extra caution. Fractures, broken shelves of ice, and discolored snow or ice are clear indicators of weak areas.
